Excavated soil often occupies more volume after loosening because the original compact structure is disturbed and more void space develops. The swell factor converts in-situ volume to an estimated loose volume.
Do not select a side slope by guesswork for safety-critical excavation. Use geotechnical information, excavation depth, groundwater conditions and the applicable safety and design requirements.
Not always. Payload mass, legal road limits, material density, body geometry and safe fill level can reduce the usable volume below the nominal body capacity.
In-situ volume is the volume of material before excavation. Loose volume is the larger volume the same material may occupy after excavation and disturbance.
