Quick Shaft Sizing Calculator

Reviewed August 2026

A fast torsion-dominated shaft sizing tool for preliminary solid or hollow shaft diameter selection from power and RPM.

Engineering scope: Preliminary calculation and learning tool. Final machine design should use the applicable design code, manufacturer data, fatigue assessment, tolerances, load spectra and service conditions.

Calculation workflow

Inputs are converted internally to SI, the engineering model is solved, and results are converted back to the selected unit system.

1 — PowerConvert to torque
2 — FactorApply torsion multiplier
3 — SizeLimit shear stress
4 — CheckTrial diameter utilization

Quick sizing inputs

Enter positive power, RPM, service factor, allowable shear and trial diameter.

Results

Operating torque
Factored torque
Required outer diameter
Shear at selected diameter
Shear utilization
Polar moment J
Important: This quick page ignores bending. Rotating shafts commonly experience gear, pulley or bearing loads; use the full Shaft Design Calculator when bending is not negligible.

Background

Useful for first-pass transmission-shaft sizing when torque is the dominant load.
