Indoor Laundry Drying & Humidity Simulator

Find out whether drying clothes indoors will make the room damp, how long the load may take, and which practical change will help most.

Model boundary: This time-step moisture model assumes a well-mixed room and fixed air temperature. It does not replace mould investigation, ventilation design, appliance instructions or measurements in the actual room.

Describe the laundry load

Use a preset if you do not know the retained water.

Best method: weigh the load wet and fully dry. A 1 kg difference is about 1 L of water.
Use your own experience. A rack load often takes roughly 8–18 hours indoors.

Describe the room

If possible, use a small hygrometer and measure the coldest nearby surface.

Floor area × ceiling height. Example: 14 m² × 2.5 m = 35 m³.
Measure the lower window edge or outside corner if available.

How will moisture leave the room?

A fan speeds drying, but ventilation or a dehumidifier must remove the water.

The model checks whether outdoor air is actually drier than indoor air.
Use a realistic room-condition value, not only the maximum laboratory label.

Worked example: family load in a modestly ventilated room

  1. The wet clothes contain an estimated 2.5 L of water.
  2. The room is 35 m³, 20°C and starts at 50% RH.
  3. The model adds evaporated laundry water to the room air, exchanges moisture with outdoor air and subtracts dehumidifier collection.
  4. If room RH approaches saturation, evaporation slows toward zero rather than continuing unrealistically.
  5. The result identifies whether the fastest improvement is better airflow around the clothes, drier outdoor-air ventilation, or a dehumidifier.

Background and recommendations

The model is intentionally practical, but the assumptions are visible.
