Measure the coldest surface, compare it with the room dew point, and find the quickest practical way to stop condensation and reduce damp risk.

Model boundary: This is a household screening calculation, not a hygrothermal building simulation. A single reading does not predict long-term mould growth, hidden moisture, rain leakage or defects inside the wall.

Choose how you know the surface temperature

Measured temperature is the default because it represents the actual cold spot.

Enter the room conditions

A simple digital thermometer and hygrometer are sufficient.

Measure near the window, away from a radiator or direct sun.
If unknown, 50% is a neutral starting value; measuring is much better.

Enter the coldest measured surface

Use the lowest reading from the lower glass edge, frame corner, seal or nearby reveal.

For glossy glass, a contact probe is preferable. An infrared thermometer may need a small piece of matte tape.
The outdoor temperature is not needed in measured mode. The calculation uses the surface you actually observed.

Worked example: why the lower window edge gets wet first

  1. Room air is 21°C at 55% RH.
  2. The calculated dew point is about 11.6°C.
  3. A measured frame corner is 10°C, which is about 1.6°C below the dew point.
  4. Condensation is therefore expected at that cold corner, even though the room-average RH is only 55%.
  5. The practical response is to reduce moisture, increase surface warmth or correct the cold bridge—not merely wipe the glass.
