Pipe Wall Thickness Calculator

Reviewed August 2026

Estimate the minimum nominal wall thickness of straight metallic pipe under internal pressure using ASME B31.3-style pressure design factors.

Critical limitation: Preliminary screening only. The applicable code edition, material allowable stress, design temperature, quality factors, external loads, corrosion, threading, bending, branches, fatigue, testing and procurement tolerances must be checked by a qualified piping engineer.

What this calculator does

Calculates pressure design thickness, adds corrosion/mechanical allowance, and corrects for negative mill tolerance. It does not select a commercial schedule automatically.

Inputs

Use the pressure required by the governing design basis.
Actual pipe outside diameter.
From the applicable code table at design temperature.
Enter positive dimensions and stress, factors within their valid ranges, and a physically valid denominator.
